Description
In a Different Light - Yosemite Falls
Photographing the great outdoors during the winter provides a unique opportunity to observe the natural landscape in, literally, a different light. The low angle of the sun creates longer shadows throughout the day, and the light is imbued with a golden hue and quality of softness. I made this particular photograph on a solo trip to Yosemite National Park in early February. The freezing temperature interacting with the water vapor of the falls formed an intricate pattern of ice crystals on the rock face—radiating out from the falling water. As the morning sun emerged over the iconic Half Dome monolith, its light brought forth a wondrous luminous glow to the lower portion of the 2,425 feet-high waterfall.
